Instagram launches long-form video app

Instagram has launched IGTV, a new app for watching long-form, vertical video. The new initiative was announced by Co-Founder & CEO Kevin Systrom, at an event in San Francisco.
IGTV starts playing as soon as the users open the app, and the system shows content from people they already follow on Instagram. In addition, the platform offers recommendations and it allows users to like, comment and send videos to friends in Direct.
All users can create their own channel on the platform to upload their videos. “In IGTV, the creators are the channels. When you follow a creator on Instagram, their IGTV channel will show up for you to watch. Anyone can be a creator — you can upload your own IGTV videos in the app or on the web to start your own channel”, said Systrom in a blog post.
Launched in 2010, Instagram has now 1 billion users worldwide, announced the company in its blog. With this new initiative, the social network, owned by Facebook, prepares to compete with YouTube. IGTV does not have advertising, although it could incorporate that option in the future. The new app will be launched globally in the coming weeks on Android and iOS devices.
