India’s Information and Broadcast Ministry has disclosed that 1.707 million STB’s are installed of the total 3.485 million STB requirements in the country’s commercial capital Mumbai. 50% of cable TV households in Mumbai are set for the digital transformation. MSO-wise installation breakup are as follows,Hathway 0.616 million STBs followed by IMCL with 0.477 million installations, Digicable reached out to 0.257 million households, Den installed 0.140 million STBs, WWIL accomplished 0.050 million and independent MSOs installed 0.169 million STBs.
Mumbai looks much prepared for STB installations when compared to other metros. Delhi and Kolkata has reached 25% of the households but Chennai is still a way behind. Ministry holds meetings with MSOs every 15 days to assess their preparedness in terms of head-end capacities to carry a minimum 200 TV channels to be extended to 500 channels and the progress of installation of STBs in cable TV homes.
The Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Amendment Act, 2011 has made it mandatory for switchover of the existing analogue Cable TV networks to Digital Addressable System (DAS) by December 2014, in the entire country in four phases. Phase I covers the four metros of the country – New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata to transform before June 30th which is now extended to October 31st . Other metros will have to gear up the STB installation for a rapid and smooth transformation.
