Facebook is developing a video app for streaming TV boxes, including Apple TV, in order to compete for TV advertising revenue, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The social networks is reportedly in talks with media companies to license long-form content, ranging from scripted shows to sports and entertainment. This new content would have TV-style advertisements.
Facebook’s interest in the video is not new. The company has already stated the importance that the video segment has acquired for the company.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the app is one of several Facebook projects aimed at making it a “video-first” company that can compete for television ad dollars.
During the presentation of the Q316 results, the company had warned that revenue growth could slow down in 2017, so its entry into the TV advertising market would be a way to confront a possible contraction.
