Eutelsat, the satellite provider, has recently revealed reaching the threshold of 1000 HD channels. This has been followed by the addition of 240 HD channels last year, thus amounting the total to 1000 HD channels across two years.

The 7/8 degrees West position hosted by Eutelsat and Nilesat satellites has up to150 HD channels in the Middle East and North Africa regions. Free-to-Air HD channels are also accounts for the groundbreaking number of channels which include five channels introduced by Kuwait TV and Echourouk News HD and the 24/7 Algerian news channel.

The HD adoption by public broadcasters (Rai and CCTV) with new premium pay TV content and a large array of free-to-air channels have contributed to this rise in the number of HD channels.

Michel Azibert, the commercial and development director of Eutelsat, commented: “2016 marked a tipping point for High Definition TV across our portfolio of video neighbourhoods, culminating in a new landmark of 1,000 channels, many of which are exclusive to Eutelsat”.

He further added: “We are fully equipped to accommodate this accelerating pace and to work closely with broadcasters as they transition to an enhanced viewing experience”.
