Ecuador to switch off analog TV by 2023

Ecuador’s telecommunications ministry has presented a new master plan for the transition to DTT in the country. The analog switch off will be conducted gradually, starting in 2020 and ending in December 2023.
The plan was presented on Wednesday, September 19, by the Minister of Telecommunications, Guillermo León. It will be carried out following three strategies: the strengthening of the regulatory environment and the conditions to favor the deployment of infrastructure, the promotion of a greater offer of TV sets and set-top boxes, as well as measures aimed at favoring the acquisition of equipment, and the promotion of new services and contents.
In a first phase, scheduled for May 2020, the ASO will be carried out in the capital Quito and its surroundings localities. In July 2020, it will include Guayaquil and surroundings cities. Phase 3 will take place in 2022 in cities with populations between 200,000 and 1 million people. Phase 4 will take place in December 2023, in cities with a population up to 200,000 people.
