It has been reported by The Herald that the digital terrestrial television (DTT) process in Zimbabwe, is 34% completed. The news was announced by Obert Muganyura, the CEO of the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ).

He also revealed that there is an outstanding amount of 42,4 million USD that needs to be paid to Huawei and other service providers that was brought to assist in the digital migration process.

The toughest challenge according to Muganyura was “the issue of funding the migration process which requires the replacement of analogue studio and transmission equipment with new digital equipment”.

Funding for the project was raised through the sale of digital spectrum to NetOne, the mobile network operator of the State. An amount of 200 million USD was obtained for an amount of 125 million USD that was required for the project.

The digitisation process is now being hindered by delays in releasing of funds from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, the central bank of the country.
