Discovery plans to launch OTT products after Scripps acquisition

Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav said that the company will begin exploring the possibility to launch OTT products after it closes its acquisition of Scripps Networks. Recently, the U.S. Department of Justice approved the transaction.
According to the executive, they will begin talking to customers about opportunities to bundle Discovery, Scripps and other programmers’ channels into OTT services, reported FierceCable. “We will be looking hard at that both domestically and internationally,” he said.
“We could create a pretty compelling offering for USD6, USD7 or USD8 that would look a lot different than Amazon Prime and Netflix, and it could be very attractive in every language globally. So we’ll keep our eye on that,” added the executive.
During 2017, Zaslav remarked on several occasions the need to create “skinny bundles” with prices around USD 10. Discovery Channel, for example, is part of Philo’s offer, the live TV streaming service for USD 16 per month.
Discovery is not yet present in OTT pay TV operators such as YouTube TV, Hulu and Sling TV, but the executive said that the intention is to be carried on every platform. In addition, the company plans to reach mobile deals with carriers in the United States, such as AT&T and Verizon, as well as in Europe, including Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom and Telecom Italia.
Meanwhile, this week Discovery announced that the Department of Justice has closed its investigation into Discovery’s proposed acquisition of Scripps Networks Interactive, which represents a step toward closing the transaction.
