DirecTV prepares for 2018 World Cup

DTV-Mundial

Guillermo Barreto, AVP Sports Content, DirecTV Latin America, spoke to NexTV News Latam about the live coverage that DirecTV Sports will offer of all 64 matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The DTH operator has broadcast the event since 1998.

-How will the coverage be for the 2018 World Cup?

We know that the TV screen is still the most important so we will improve the coverage we have already done. Since 2002, with the Korea-Japan World Cup, we offer the interactive mosaic and we will continue to do so with some improvements and some adjustments. We are going to maintain the same feature that we have presented in the 2014 World Cup, which is specific audios for the teams of each Latam country, as well as a channel with narration in neutral Spanish. We have noticed that people value the mosaic and use it especially when Latin American teams are playing. They are interested in watching the substitute bench, the cameras focused specifically on certain players and the arrival of the teams and fans to the stadiums.

Since 2014, this experience has already been presented on Internet and mobile devices. It is the same experience as on TV but in this case, users have access to On Demand content. The offer of DirecTV both on TV and now on the Internet and mobile will be the most complete coverage of the World Cup.

– What will be the activity in social media?

This World Cup we will promote the activity on social networks. During the Confederations Cup FIFA allowed us to publish the goals through the official accounts of DirecTV Sports on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and we are working to see how we potentiate this for the World Cup. It will be a super important tool for us to maintain the dialogue and communication with our clients and keep them informed.

– Will DirecTV offer 360-degree content?

It is something to be confirmed, we work closely with FIFA, we have a good relationship and they are always trying, like DirecTV, to improve the offer for the World Cup.

-How is DirecTV preparing to meet the demand on the streaming service?

We have a phrase that is “In DirecTV you have a World Cup every seven days”. We have such good coverage of the Spanish League, the Premier League and the French League, among others. Therefore, we have a lot of soccer matches with high demand and that allows us to permanently improve the offer to reach the World Cup in the best way. In Russia, we will have to be very well prepared because the matches will be played very early and people will be at work, or on the way to work, they will watch the matches online and on mobile devices and Directv will be prepared to deliver the best quality and signal on any device.
