DirecTV (AT&T) is exploring the addition of eSports to programming. Guillermo Barreto, AVP Sports Content at DirecTV Latin America, told NexTV News Latam that eSports “are booming” but acknowledged that “the business model has not yet been found, at least for traditional TV.”
“When you buy the rights to the Spanish League, you know how it will turn out, what kind of customers and audience ratings will you have,” said the executive regarding the linear model. Instead, Barreto considered that it is still hard to put together a young platform like eSports with a more traditional one like TV.
“We are always evaluating it, looking for new opportunities, so far we have not found the magic formula. But we are always analyzing and studying it because it is impossible to ignore it,” Barreto added.
While exploring the incorporation of new businesses, Directv remains committed with one of the area it knows better: the coverage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which the DTH operator has broadcast since 1998. Next year, DirecTV Sports will cover live all the 64 matches of the tournament in Russia, as Barreto already detailed in an interview with NexTV News Latam.
