Claro takes another step towards entering Argentina’s pay TV market

Argentina’s National Entity for Communications (Ente Nacional de Comunicaciones, Enacom) authorized the modification of AMX Argentina statute. This way, the company moves forward with its plan to enter the pay TV market next year.

Enacom said in a resolution, published in the official gazette, that it decided to register the modification of the corporate purpose of the AMX Argentina statute, which had been approved at a Shareholders’ Meeting in July 2015. Telefónica Argentina and Telecom already did the same in order to enter the pay TV market.

In December, 2016, the government issued a decree that introduced changes in the telecommunications market and authorized the telcos to offer pay TV services from 2018, but only by “physical link”.

However, several local media published rumors saying the new convergence law, which is being prepared by current administration, could authorize the use of satellite technology (DTH) that telecom companies have been asking and for which they already have coverage in the country. In May this year, Carlos Slim, owner of América Móvil, asked for greater competition in the DTH market.
