OTT Chivas TV has expansion plans for the US market

The Mexican OTT Chivas TV has set a goal for 2019: to start broadcasting the football matches of Chivas Guadalajara club in the United States. This was revealed by the Director of the platform, Amaury Vergara, at Cisco Live 2017, event held in Cancun, Mexico, between November 6th and 9th.

Currently, Chivas TV is available worldwide, except for the US. In this country, it has a contract with the TV channel Univision, that doesn’t allow streaming the matches. This contract ends in 2019. “In that moment, we will assess if Univision is still interested in Chivas or if there is someone else interested, but we do know that we want to have a partner that knows that it will have to get along with Chivas TV,” Vergara said.

Thinking about this expansion, the Director of the platform also explained that they are already producing subtitled content in English and that very soon they will begin to show the games with stories and comments in that language as well. The potential market in the United States is very big for Chivas, as the club has 4 million fans, he informed.

During his conference, the director remembered that the beginnings of the platform were very complicated -the first game was broadcast in July 2016-, as it suffered hacks and sabotages. However, he confirmed that nowadays the project is already sustainable. Regarding the financial issues, Vergara explained that before the end of the year they will stop closing the balances with losses and that the initial investment will be returned in two years.
