Chilean free-to-air channels want to postpone the analog switch-off

Chile’s free-to-air TV channels called for an extension of the analogue switch-off date, which is scheduled for 2020, due to the delay in the implementation of digital technology. The request came after a meeting between representatives of the Sub-secretariat of Telecommunications (Subtel) and the television industry, reported La Tercera.
According to the chairman of the board of directors of the National Television Association (Anatel), Ernesto Corona, currently the situation “is difficult” and “surely it will be necessary to consider an extension of a couple of years to be able to comply with what the law requires”.
The implementation schedule for digital TV estimated that the deployment should currently cover 15% of the population, but according to the Government, that goal has not been met. “It is a concern the level of delay in the implementation of digital TV”, said before the meeting the Telecommunications Undersecretary Pamela Gidi.
Although the deployment should be around 15%, Canal 13 reached 8%, Chilevisión 5%, Mega 4% and TVN 2%, according to Diario Financiero.
