Canal + announced the acquirement of broadcasting right for the 2018 FIFA world cup in Africa. The sportive event will take place in Russia and about 20 African nations are going through the qualification stage to be part of the big event. The rights hold by Canal plus are not exclusive and others PayTV operators already have bought the rights as well such as StarTimes or SuperSport.
The event will be commented in French and broadcasted in all sub Saharan Africa except South Africa and Nigeria. David Mignot, Head of Canal+ Africa declared: “Acquisition of broadcasting rights for the entire FIFA World cup in Africa as well as African qualifications for this edition rejoice us once more. Those successive acquisitions allow Canal + group to follow through the increase of its sport contents to all subscribers on the continent”.
Canal + is present on this continent for 20 years and cover 25 countries with more than 200 channels. In French speaking countries more than 2 million subscribers have been counted. The group has also created original content specifically targeting Africa.
