BOCRA licences four TV stations in Botswana

Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) licenced four TV stations, namely OVY Network, Alfaview, Deep Vibe Productions T/A Clouds TV and Econet Botswana T/A Kwesé TV. All four companies applied for licences after a public notice for licence bidding was circulated early this year.

Ovy and Alfaview will operate as a subscription satellite television service providers. Clouds TV will air free and Kwese TV will be a subscription management service provider.

BOCRA’s deputy director of corporate communications, Aaron Nyelesi, said :“The licensees will carry all the broadcasting obligations including responsibility over suitability of broadcast material for Botswana audience. The broadcast content could be locally produced by the broadcaster or commissioned from third parties in a form of a full channel or a packaged programme.”

He also mentioned that more companies remain to be licenced as they are still assisting other applicants on the proper procedures of applying for the TV licence.

The four stations join Star Times and Mediacore Botswana, which were given licences last year. Having several TV stations in the country means that the broadcasting and media is growing and it will also create employment for the country’s media and communication graduates.

Tshoganetso Kepaletswe, BOCRA acting chief executive officer said “We desire you to make content that is not only destined for your platforms, but rather content that is also destined for international markets and other broadcasting platforms. I challenge you to change the landscape,”.  He further stated that they are licencing more companies because they want to see the industry grow and offer consumers a variety of choice.
