Azam TV is believed to have ended its sponsorship of the Rwanda Premier Football League, a decision that has come as a huge blow to the league.
Azam TV entered into a memorandum of Understanding with the local Football Association (FERWAFA) as a potential sponsor to a tune of $2.35million for five years staring from 2014, the sponsorship deal included the broadcasting rights. The deal was expected to be renewed when it expires in 2020.
However, in a letter addressed to the local football body FERWAFA, Azam TV informed the local football body, “They will no longer be the football league sponsors starting from August 21, 2019,”
Sources claim the reason is because of the sponsorship entered between defending champions Rayon Sports and brand SKOL the beer company.
Ferwafa admitted that they received the letter from Azam TV informing them that they are pulling out of the deal which runs out next year and the league will not be called Azam Rwanda Premier Football League.
Regis Uwayezu, the secretary-general of Ferwafa informed the clubs, that they should be ready to coup with the situation, and negotiations are going on all fronts to reinstate the sponsorship deal.
This is the second time that a major potential sponsor has walked out on the Rwanda Premier League, the first time it was Bralirwa PLC the former league sponsor, the reason was the jersey sponsorship signed between SKOL the rival beer competitor and Rayon Sports. The loss of sponsorship is believed to only add to the problems faced by Ferwafa.
