Airtel Nigeria and Ericsson have announced the creation of a new OTT service called Nuvu. The OTT platform Nuvu will be providing access to more than 3000 different shows coming from local as well as international production. Airtel customers will be able to download the content to their devices with no additional cost during off peak times. The content will be accessible off line for a month after the download.
The service can be accessed via a weekly or monthly subscription method, the customers also got the two first week for free.
The service will come under the form of an app for Android OS only but announcement have been made for the IOS as well. Commenting on the new SVoD service Chief Commercial Officer, Airtel Nigeria, Ahmad Mokhles, declared “Nuvu is a glowing testimony and clear demonstration of Airtel’s commitment to revolutionize Nigeria’s mobile Internet space with innovative offerings that will enrich the lives of consumers and also empower them to succeed in their respective endeavours”.
President and Managing Director of Ericsson Nigeria, Rutger Reman commented as well “According to a recent Ericsson Consumer-Lab Report, only 30 percent of Nigerians are satisfied with streaming over the internet. Nuvu – a download service that attracts no additional data charge during off-peak downloads – is very apt for this market. The built-in ability to distribute content to consumers during off-peak periods minimizes data costs for both the operator and consumer, addressing the cost challenge that has so far been an obstacle for video-on-demand uptake in Africa. Nuvu is a more inclusive VOD service than most alternatives currently available in Nigeria. We applaud Airtel’s foresight in being the first to launch this innovative service to their consumers and are glad to have partnered with them on this.”
